| Philosophy of Education
Ase provides a holistic approach
to education. We include knowledge of values, principles, philosophies,
and all things that define culture in our teachings. Lessons will
be reinforced by positive examples, both historical and contemporary.
We believe that this approach enhances the students' overall development
and promotes a more enriched self identity.
At Ase, students do not learn to read and
write; they read and write in order to learn.
Through research we have seen that the connection between children of African-descent and education is at its best when the educational experience is made relevant to each child. Thus we provide academic disciplines designed to inspire students to pursue knowledge. We teach our students that tools such as communication, critical thinking and analysis are building blocks to attaining elevated levels of knowledge. Our classes introduce students to applications of knowledge throughout the disciplines. Many of the assigned projects are designed, in fact, to show the inter-relatedness of the disciplines. We are revealing to the students how their lessons will lead to an understanding of the larger world in which they live.
Ase strives to nurture the intelligence, energy,
creativity and thirst for knowledge with which all children
are born. Each aspect of our academy is designed to help develop our young peoples' senses of self-confidence, self-awareness, and self-discipline, helping them to understand how their example and collective efforts can impact the wider society.
"In truth, many Africans find this vision
too beautiful to be true; not so long ago some of them could not
break with the idea that Blacks are non-existent culturally and
historically. It was necessary to put up with the cliché
that Africans had no history and try to build something modestly."
- Cheikh Anta Diop
Our challenge as students, teachers, and parents is to contribute to the design of a society ready and willing to promote the success of peoples of African descent, in the tradition of our ancestors. |
