Activities

Ase's core programming revolves around educational and cultural enrichment, providing weekly tutoring and mentoring opportunities, as well as semininar-style courses. We also take advantage of the many activities and events on Penn's campus and the surrounding Philadelphia community.

Many Ase staff members are involved in Penn Performing Arts groups such as African Rhythms, New Spirit at Penn, African-American Arts Alliance, DH2, and more. Ase supports these performances each semester by attending them as a large group, or encouraging mentors to take their students. We've also attended the Black Arts Expo at Temple University, the Celebration of Black Writing, and the University of Pennsylvania Museum's Black History Gala, College Fairs, Black Wharton's Howard E. Mitchell conference, among other events in the city.

Each year Ase hosts an annual field trip, to either Washington DC, where we've toured museums, learned about the African-centered elements within the district's design, and visited Howard University, or New York City, where we've walked the historical streets of Harlem and explored the Schomberg Museum for Research in Black Culture. See our Events Gallery for pictures.

Finally, our seminar curricula gives students an opportunity to research their own communities, interview family members and elders, participate in socially-positive media and arts outlets, develop business ideas, and much more. See Student Activities for more.
