What is Ase?

Ase: The Saturday Academy is an academic and cultural enrichment program in Philadelphia, working with area middle and high school students on Saturdays during the school year. There are three Ase programs: Ase Foundations (grades 6 and 7), Ase Prep (grades 8 and 9), and Ase Futures (grades 10-12). Our aim is to empower and encourage our students by engaging them in a number of academic and social areas. We let the students know that contrary to what they are often times led to believe in this society, there is strength, achievement and success in our past, present, and future.

Ase was developed to fill a need for positive cultural and social development for young people in our community. Enrichment programs such as Saturday schools and after-school activities are not new ideas, however Ase brings a new energy through what we have to offer. We have a staff of over thirty multi-talented teachers, coordinators, assistants, and mentors, all understanding the importance of education, and committed to the mission of Ase.

The term "Ase" is of Yoruba origin, and is generally used as a statement of affirmation. It has many applications, including to give thanks or show appreciation or acknowledgement. Most commonly, when people say "Ase" they mean, "let it be so."

Ase admits students, volunteers, and paid-staff of any race, color, and national or ethnic origin.
